John Fuller (1928 – 2005) was London U-18 champion 1946 and British U-18 champion the same year (beating Gordon Crown in 10 moves in the final round). He did well in the 1949 British championship and at Hastings 1949-50 but then played little other chess. His greatest service to English chess was that at school in Harrow he was friendly and played often with a keen player who remained interested in the game and who later became the most significant benefactor English chess has ever known - Jim Slater.
